Could This Resource Boost Your Appreciation for Prayer?

April 23, 2012

After my mom screamed, “Remember to say your prayers” I would jump over in my bed and repeat my little formula before sleeping.

“Dear Jesus, thank you for today, thank you for letting me live to see today, for keep me safe throughout the night…bless mommy and daddy, and my brothers and sister. Amen.”

As I grew older and the childhood formula grew dull, I found that whenever I tried to pray my mind would wander wildly, or I’d be so bored I’d fall asleep or I just didn’t know what to say.

Don’t be fooled – even artists, who appear to be the very definition of freedom and individuality, must learn within a structure.

Things changed in a big way when someone explained praying to me – its purpose and all that it can and perhaps should entail if I wanted it to be meaningful. It was a simple, memorable but also quite adaptable to my growing needs. I made it my own. It was easier to pray without being aimless or bored and I found myself growing in my love for prayer and my belief in its effectiveness.

Well, for these reasons I would recommend this website I recently stumbled upon. It focuses on what they call Mathew Henry’s Method of Prayer which emphasizes “biblical prayer.”

3 Reasons You Should Check It Out

I endorse this resource and encourage you to check it out because I believe:

1.       Working within a structure is one of the best ways to improve at anything,

Don’t be fooled – even artists, who appear to be the very definition of freedom and individuality, must learn within a structure. Musicians, playing their hearts out wild and free can only do it now because once they stuck through the rigours of rigid practice. No matter how free flowing they sound, they must STILL play notes, on a scale.

2.       Mathew Henry’s work is all based on solid biblical foundation,

The more of our lives that we can base on a solid foundation like the bible, the better. Of biblical scholars, Mathew Henry is tops. He’s most well known for his huge commentary on the whole bible. I have a copy – it’s over 2,500 pages of incredibly fine print (great read).

3.       It is well organized and very modern.

I love how modern and user-friendly the site is. I am sure you will appreciate it too.

One Downside

You may not appreciate the language at times. Matthew Henry was writing in the late 1600s. It is manageable though once you have an open mind.

If You are interested, this is what the creators of the website say about what it offers:

Why read A Method for Prayer?

Resorting to a more scriptural pattern of prayer may be a simple (but profound) answer to many problems in our practice of prayer. There are a number of reasons that could be given as to why Christians should “Pray the Bible,” but the ones below combine to make a rather convincing argument:

1 Praying scripturally will teach us what prayer is, even while we do it.
2 It will correct “shopping list” views of prayer which abound in the Christian community.
3 It will begin to solve in our own minds the question of “unanswered prayer.”
4 It will remind us of just how much there is to pray about day by day.
5 It will teach us of the extreme urgency of prayer.
6 It will return proportion to prayers long on petition, but short on adoration, confession, and thanksgiving.
7 It will instruct us how best to pray for ministers, missionaries, and one another.
8 It will show us the proper way to approach God in prayer.
9 It will remind us of the good things that God does for us (which we, more often than not, take for granted).
10 It will remind us to always give thanks to God (which, paradoxically, is so important for our own assurance of His faithfulness in answering prayer).
11 It will begin to engrave in our minds biblical patterns of thought which can help immunize us from the enticing folly of the world’s view of life.
12 It will force us to rehearse the solemn warnings and precious promises of God (which will do eternal good to our souls).
13 It will move us from our inherent man-centeredness in prayer to a biblical, God-centered way of praying.

Well what do you think? Please share.
